World Heritage in Africa

This is a Call for applications for Internships to support World Heritage in Africa. Within the framework of the 2012-2017 Action Plan for World Heritage in Africa and its Regional Capacity Building Programme, three unique internship opportunities are being offered from 1 March 2014 to 31 May 2014 in the following three international heritage organizations: The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF), located in Midrand (South Africa) http://www.awhf.net/ The Centre for Heritage Development in Africa (CHDA), located in Mombasa (Kenya) http://www.heritageinafrica.org and The Ecole du Patrimoine Africain (EPA), located in Porto-Novo (Benin) http://www.heritageinafrica.org

PROTECTING FALCONS- PAKISTAN



The wildlife raid team in Pakistan, have caught four falcons from Badhaber Kohot road Peshawar in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, northwest Pakistan that were being carried to Karachi. The illegal poaching of this precious falcon was banned due its decreased number in the whole world. Thus the wildlife raid team was rewarded with Rs. 50,000 and additionally the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa minister has also directed the department to take strict action against the illegal hunting of falcons.

FOREST FIRE IN BHUTAN



The first forest fire of the year 2013-2014 burnt four to five acres of government reserved forest above Jazam, near Namseling in Thimphu, capital of Bhutan. The fire had started around 12.30 pm on 25th December which was later on fanned by strong winds. According to the Forestry Facts and figures, 2013, about 12,175 acres of forest was destroyed by the fire last year in the whole country.

DIVERTED RIVER WASHES AWAY PADDY FIELD- BHUTAN



Local farmers around Chamakharchhu River, northern Bhutan are worried because paddy fields along the riverside are being washed away. Five landowners have claimed that about 20 decimals of the land area have been washed away by the river since 2010. If the protection activity is not undertaken soon, the river will slowly erode the fields along its bank.

TIMBER SMUGGLING- NEPAL



Timber smuggling is rising day by day in Batpora forest, 12Km from Kupwara town, northern India. According to the locals, timbers are being smuggled at night time and the forest officials are hand in glove with the smugglers. In want of effective monitoring of the forest by the field staff the forest will be transformed to barren land soon.

TRADITIONAL PONDS ON VERGE OF EXTINCTION- NEPAL



Locals of Kandi belt region in Jammu district, northern India had constructed many ponds for harvesting rainwater to solve their problem of water scarcity. But those ponds are now in risk due to new settlements in the area. Traditional ponds are in the verge of extinction due to poor management, growing population, growth of new residential colonies, solid waste dumping and sewerage disposal.
