Rampant deforestation in the forest around Rara Lake in Mugu district,
north west Nepal has induced landslides and if unchecked the lake is likely to
burst in the near future. The deforestation rate is supposed to have increased
after handing the forest over to the community in 2001. However, the locals
blame the buffer zone Management Committee for not working properly.
