For the first
time since 2003, we have a pregnant female! Our keepers and veterinary staff
are cautiously optimistic that 24-year-old Hlala Kahili will give birth to the
first - of hopefully many - offspring of our new silverback Badongo!
This is fantastic news on many levels, not
least of which is the profound effect it will have on solidifying our gorilla
group as a ‘family’. Much like people, the arrival of a little one brings
gorillas together to share the duties. Badongo will enjoy a definite position
as the dominant male, and ‘Kahili’ - as she is known for short here - will
become an important maternal figure!
