THE GREEN AND BLUE PROJECT- BHUTAN

Group of youth who call themselves Youth in Blue (YIB) in Bhutan have started a waste management initiative to drive home the message that blue collar jobs are respectable, while productively addressing an issue confronted by the country, especially in urban areas. Initiation of this project is to promote blue-collar job. YIB has dispatched three truckloads of waste and earned about Nu 82,000.  YIB collects all sorts of wastes like PET bottles, glass, metal scrap, paper, biodegradable and non-degradable wastes, including e-waste, from each household. After the collection, the waste is segregated and the biodegradable wastes are used for agricultural purposes while those with commercial value are sold and the rests are taken to the landfill. Thus, the 3Rs – reuse, recycle and reduce are being implemented in this project.
