Several lakes in Kapilvastu district, southern Nepal, are disappearing
day by day due to increasing human encroachment and gradual siltation. The
Jagdishpur reservoir, Ajigrar Lake and many other are on the verge of
extinction but concerned authorities are not paying attention. Ramsar
Convention, of which Nepal is a signatory, states that the loss of wetlands
causes serious and irreparable environmental change affecting the provision of
ecosystem services.
