Despite being the largest industrial corridor of
the country, Biratnagar in southeastern Nepal faces shortage of electricity and
has been forced to import from India. The actual demand of the eastern region
of Nepal is 150MW. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) imports 80-85 MW
electricity from India while the remaining is supplied by generators which cost
NPR 35 per unit compared to NPR 8 for electricity supplied by NEA.
