Despite the advent of a large number of
migratory birds in an internationally recognized wetland, the Pong Dam Lake in Himachal
Pradesh, North India, its tourism potential still remains unexploited. About
1.23 lakh migratory birds had arrived in the area last year. Taking this fact
under consideration, the department of Tourism had planned to build a parking
place and tourist reception centre near the lake. But the locals have demanded
the provision of basic infrastructure first,
which would generate employment and promote tourism.
