RAPID URBANIZATION, DECLINING CRANES- BHUTAN

Rapid infrastructure development in Bhutan has resulted in declining count of endangered black necked cranes and large billed crow. Human encroachment in their habitat and chemical in their food is the main reason for their extinction. As a consequence of urbanization the residents of Phobjikha valley are giving up farming to provide home stay facility to the tourist. Home-stay is one of the components of a community-based sustainable tourism project funded by Japan international cooperation agency (JICA) to improve livelihood of communities and to conserve the habitat of crane.
