A recent survey by American and Chinese
conservationists had found that the Tibetan wild yak (Tib: Drong), the third
largest land mammal in Asia, could be making a comeback following a sharp
decline in numbers in the mid 20th century due to over hunting. The Wildlife
Conservation Society in a release said it counted nearly 1,000 wild yaks in the
Kekexili Nature Preserve on the remote Tibetan plateau. The now endangered
species, fifty years ago, roamed the entire Tibetan plateau, managing to
sustain themselves on the stunted grass roots at elevations of up to 17,500
feet.
