A pond
named Kamal pokhari (lotus pond) in Kathmandu valley, central Nepal, used to be
covered with lotus flowers till three decades back with high level of water throughout
the year. But, today not a single lotus plant is seen in the pond. Instead the
pond is on the verge of drying up as it depends solely on rainfall for water
due to heavy siltation and human encroachment. The pond is now reduced to15.32
ha, which is half of its original size.
