Tibet Autonomous Region harbors the largest
wetland system in China. More than six million hectare area has 17 varieties of
wetlands according to the first wetland survey of 1996 to 2000. According to
the local forestry department, Tibet has more than 1,500 lakes with a total
area of 2.5 million hectares, accounting for 30 per cent of lake area in the
entire country.
