Rampant pollution and siltation have taken a heavy toll
on aquatic life in Wullar Lake in Jammu and Kashmir, northern west India which
is also the largest freshwater lake in Asia. Numerous streams and springs
recharge the lake while it also facilitates cultural fishery which was the main
source of fish production in the region till a few decades ago. However, large
quantities of sewage discharged from Srinagar city and major towns into the
lake have resulted in increased eutrophication which has severely affected over
3000 fishermen.
