GAURI SHANKER CONSERVATION AREA: WHO OWNS IT?- Nepal

The Community Forest Rights Struggle Committee at Gauri Shanker conservation area once again lashed out at the government’s decision on declaring it as a conservation area and demanded that the government to withdraw its decree as it violates the rights of local communities. One of the member of the committee bemoaned that the conservation area, which comprises community-owned forests in Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk and Ramechhap districts, was declared without the consent of local people and other stakeholders. In December 2009, Government declared Gaurishankar and Api Nampa in Darchula district as conservation areas.
