POLLUTION IN BRAHMAPUTRA VALLEY CAUSING MELTING OF GLACIERS
A
study on the Black Carbon (BC) aerosol pollution levels in the Brahmaputra
river valley has warned that the river valley has been experiencing extreme
regional climate change in recent years. The study suggests that Guwahati has
one of the highest BC pollution levels (over 50 micrograms/m3 during evenings
and early mornings in winter) in the world and the pollutants are causing the
increase in day temperature by two degrees. Consequently, these pollutants are
flowing into China Himalayas which is causing the rapid melting of glaciers and
interfering with monsoon cycles.
