NATIVE FISH DISPLACED BY EXOTIC SPECIES- PAKISTAN
According to the World Wide Fund for
Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) officials, the native fish species has dropped drastically
in Pakistan due to the introduction of exotic species in water bodies. It
further added that overfishing, habitat degradation, pollution and introduction
of exotic fish species have caused the serious threat on the productivity of
natural freshwater bodies. At present, WWF-Pakistan is working to enhance
productivity of the water bodies as well as create livelihood options for
fishermen communities.

LANCANG RIVER LISTED AS NATIONAL WATER PARK- CHINA
The
Lancang River in Nangchen county of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture has
recently been listed as a national water park. The river is also known as the
first gorge of three major rivers in Southern China that consist of mountains and canyons,
pleasing landscapes, mild climate and abundance of cultural relics. According
to the authorities, 12 water parks have already been listed at the national
level from the Qinghai province alone.

WETLAND BIRDS IN PERIL- INDIA
Basai
wetland of Gurgaon in Shimla, north India known a bird sanctuary is now facing
a big problem where the migratory bird count has shown a decline because of
habitat loss due to human encroachment. According to the study conducted by
Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), 10 important birds are in serious danger
of being extinct. Rapid urbanization is considered to be one of the reasons for
the decline in bird populations.

MISSING TOKAY GECKOS- INDIA
Missing of six Gecko
lizards from Assam state zoo has posed an embarrassment for the Sate forest
Department, Assam, north-east India. According to the concerned authority,
Gecko lizards kept in the Reptile house of the zoo may have been stolen and it
is a serious issue. The Tokay Gecko species of the lizard is protected under
Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act (WPA), 1972. There is a high demand
for the Tokay Gecko for its medicinal qualities for treatment of incurable
diseases like cancer and AIDS.

POACHERS ARRESTED- NEPAL
Police has nabbed two youth in possession of
2.2 kg of dried sea horse (Hippocampus sp.)
from Keshar Mahal of Kathmandu, central Nepal. The trade of this species has
been banned in Nepal since May 15, 2004. Meanwhile a wild elephant was found
dead in Madhuban Mathawal of Parsa, central Nepal. Bullet spots on its body has
raised suspicion that elephant was shot dead by poachers.
