Missing of six Gecko
lizards from Assam state zoo has posed an embarrassment for the Sate forest
Department, Assam, north-east India. According to the concerned authority,
Gecko lizards kept in the Reptile house of the zoo may have been stolen and it
is a serious issue. The Tokay Gecko species of the lizard is protected under
Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act (WPA), 1972. There is a high demand
for the Tokay Gecko for its medicinal qualities for treatment of incurable
diseases like cancer and AIDS.
