We Canada in Rio for the Earth Summit 2012

Greetings from Rio! In preparation for the Earth Summit 2012, We Canada is officially releasing its consultation report from the Tour and Earth Summit Dialogues. Our team was overwhelmed with the overall quality of the ideas shared by Canadian youth. Twenty key priorities were highlighted related to energy, water, green cities, sustainable consumption and production, environmental conservation and humanitarian issues and social justice. Here are are some noteworthy quotes:
“We need to use resources properly. We are one of the lucky countries that have an abundance of natural resources; let’s use them sustainably and to their greatest value.”
“We should implement a clear environmental policy, especially on the oil sands, to protect our planet.”
We invite you to read the report to discover the creativity and brilliance of Canadian youth! Most importantly, we ask that you share the report on your social networks. Please find below a sample Tweet and Facebook message. Lastly, we’d like to thank you for all your hard work in spreading our news. Without you, our messages would not have reached so many people. For that and for everything else, we thank you very much! Here is a link to full report (English only) and executive summary (in English and French): http://earthsummit.ca/about/campaigns/tour/.

The Earth Summit 2012 (CANADIAN YOUTH REQUEST)

The Earth Summit 2012 is fast approaching and the Canadian government has to announce if it will include youth and NGO delegates among its official Canadian delegation. Including citizen representatives on the official Canadian delegation made us a leader on the international stage at the Earth Summit of 1992. It's time to honor that tradition. Sign the Act Now letter and share it with your friends (http://earthsummit.ca/act/) ! Show the Canadian government that youth and NGOs want to be heard at Earth Summit 2012!

About We Canada:

"We Canada is a nation-wide initiative for Canadian leadership in sustainable development at the Earth Summit 2012. Our goal is to represent the Canadians that otherwise wouldn't have been represented. We aim to bring a diversity of Canadian voices to the Earth Summit 2012 and to the Government of Canada’s attention.

The initiative aims to influence Canadian political actors to adopt progressive policies on sustainable development. The three policy proposals put forward by We Canada are: Measuring What Matters, Getting the Prices Right and Making Trade Fair. We Canada is about talking, about sharing, about creating a community of engaged citizens around common ideas and concerns for our future. We  Canada is about telling our leaders that they must take a stand for sustainability because this is our priority.

We want your voice to be heard when Canada speaks up for you at the Earth Summit 2012. Whether you see sustainable development as a health issue, an environmental issue, a social issue, an equality issue, a political issue, or a global issue - you’re right! Together, WE CAN address all of these challenges and make our voices heard at this globally important event."
Earth Summit Dialogues:

"The Earth Summit Dialogues, is an initiative to encourage Canadians to take action for Canadian leadership at the Earth Summit 2012. Through the dialogues Canadians will have an opportunity to engage in discussions related to sustainability at the local level. These discussions will involve friends, family, students and/or colleagues and will focus on We Canada’s three major policy proposals for the Earth Summit 2012. The results from these dialogues will then be presented at the conference in Rio de Janeiro during the We Canada event. The Earth summit Dialogues will be hosted in Canadian homes from April 15 – May 15, 2012.

The three policy recommendations that are the topic of discussion of the Earth Summit Dialogues are: Measuring What Matters, that aims to establish an efficient method to measure human welfare, Getting the Prices Right that targets the Canadian government to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and place an economy-wide price on carbon and Making Trade Fair, that addresses Canada’s economic activity on a global scale and focuses on ways to ensure that Canadian trade advances the social, environmental and economic wellbeing of other people and places around the world."

The Canadian Earth Summit Coalition

The Canadian Earth Summit Coalition is a self-organized, independent, and informal civil society network of non-governmental, non-profit academic and research organizations and ethical business networks.

The Coalition’s primary goal is to coordinate civil society movement in a push for Canadian leadership at the Earth Summit 2012. This will be achieved by a parallel policy consultation process with both coalition partners and the Canadian public, and communicated through widespread engagement and education campaigns. The ongoing results of policy recommendations and key thematic messaging will be disseminated through events, champion messages, and social and traditional media.

The We Canada initiative focuses on engaging Canadians in discussions on sustainable development and provides a forum for educating the public and developing policy recommendations. We work to amplify the sustainability  movement by building on the strong foundations already created by Canadian organizations such as yours, and by engaging voices of all Canadians – even those who are not traditionally included in these conversations.
