Rhino poaching continues unchecked in Assam
despite high security. Two one-horned rhinos (Rhinoceros unicornis) have been
gunned down lately by poachers in Kaziranga National Park. The number of rhinos
killed reached 27 till August 2013, which was 23 in 2012. Horns are used in traditional
medicine for treatment of cancer and arthritis as well as in jewelry.
