PRISON TERMS FOR COMMUNITY FORESTRY USERS

The Jhapa District Court has slapped six month prison term and a penalty of NPR 328,000 each for 23 committee members, totaling NPR 7.54 million.  All members of Srijana community forest user group in Ilam, eastern Nepal had covert involvement in massive tree felling last year. In another report, deforestation is rampant in national and community forests in Ramechhap district, northeast Nepal as 'smugglers' continue to exploit forests with three sawmills operating inside forests.
