CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLACIER RETREAT- CHINA

Scientists say that large area of the glaciers in southwest China's Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has melted.  Some 80 glaciers at the source of the Yellow River headwaters is shrinking fast and about 70 sq km (5.3%), of the glaciers in Yangtze headwaters have melted away over the past three decades. Data collected over the past 50 years show a continuous rise in the average temperature of the three-river headwaters area. It is estimated that 70% of the glaciers in Lancang River headwaters have disappeared due to the warm weather.
