TIGERS MAY RISE IN NORTHEAST AND BRAMHAPUTRA PLAINS

Assam in 2006 recorded a population of 70 tigers and in 2010, its population has grown to 143 animals. In adjoining Mizoram, the population has declined by one from six to five. Arunachal Pradesh in 2006 registered 14 tigers but in 2010, it was nil. Over all, the tiger population in northeast Hills and Brahmaputra Plains has increased from 100 in 2006 to 148 in 2010. For entire India, an increase of 20% in tiger numbers in 2010 was surveyed with an estimated number of 1,706 (1571-1875). The 2006 estimation was 1,411 (1165-1657) tigers.
